Establishment of the Department: 1987
The Department of Biotechnology, Punjabi University, Patiala was established under the aegis of University Grants Commission, New Delhi in 1987, which was renamed as Department of Biotechnology & Food Technology in 2022. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, New Delhi accorded recognition to its M.Sc. course in the academic session 1993-94. To meet the growing HRD requirements of the food and agro based industries, the department also started a Diploma course in Microbial and Food Technology from the academic session 1991-92 which was raised to a full-fledged M.Sc. course, funded by Govt. of Punjab, from the session 1994-95. In addition to two M.Sc. Hon's programmes and one Five Year Integrated Course (Biological Sciences), department has successfully completed the Interdisciplinary Programme in Life Sciences (IPLS) scheme granted by DBT, Govt. of India. The department has a faculty of highly qualified teachers who are working in thrust areas of Food and Fermentation Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology. The research efforts of the faculty members have been strengthened as it has been recognized two times under the FIST programme of DST, Govt. of India from 2003-08 and 2010-15. Many major research projects have been awarded to the department by various funding agencies like AICTE, CSIR, DBT, DST, DRDO, ICAR-NAIP and UGC etc.
The department is actively engaged in the research work and has more than 500 publications with high impact factors and some patents to its credit. The faculty members are involved in various collaborative projects with national Institutes such IIIM, Jammu; PGI, Chandigarh; AIIMS, New Delhi; IARI, Delhi; IIT, Delhi and International Institutes such as University of Aberdeen, UK; Chembiotech Laboratories, UK; Deakin University and Griffith University, Australia. Various faculty members are providing consultancy to industries of Punjab. Facilities like cold room; culture room; fermentation technology, downstream processing, molecular biology and genetic engineering, nanotechnology laboratories etc. are equipped with sophisticated instruments such as HPLC, FPLC, HPTLC, Freeze Dryer, Rota-Vac, Electrochemical stations, Fiberoptic spectrometer, Uv-Vis and Vis spectrometers, PCRs, RT-PCRs, Genetic Analyzer, Microplate Reader, Zeta sizer, Fermentors, Ultrasonic Processors,Gel -DOC, Ultracentrifuge, BOD-Incubators, CO2 Incubators and Deep Freezers etc. of more than 1 crore. The department has a well established Bio-informatics lab with internet facility and softwares such as Biomed Cache, ChemDraw, T-sar, Gencheck, Exiom Horizon with state of the art Work stations. All the classrooms are equipped with LCD Projectors for teaching and seminars. Department has an in-house library with specialized books for teaching and research activities. An IPRs club was also established in collaboration with Punjab State Council for Science & Technology. The students of the department are placed in various industries, academic and research organizations of national as well as international repute.
ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਦੀ ਮਿਤੀ: 1987
ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕਨਾਲੌਜੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ 1987 ਵਿਚ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਗ੍ਰਾਂਟਸ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨ, ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਹੇਠ ਸਥਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਲ 2022 ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਦਲ ਕੇ ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਤਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ । ਬਾਇਓਟੈਕਨਾਲੌਜੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ, ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ, ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਨੇ 1993-94 ਦੇ ਵਿਦਿਅਕ ਸੈਸ਼ਨ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਵਿਭਾਗੀ ਐਮ. ਐਸ. ਸੀ. ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਭੋਜਨ ਅਤੇ ਖੇਤੀ ਆਧਾਰਤ ਸਨਅਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਧਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ, ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੇ ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਸੈਸ਼ਨ 1991-1992 ਤੋਂ ਮਾਈਕਰੋਬਾਇਲ ਅਤੇ ਫੂਡ ਟੈਕਨੋਲੋਜੀ ਵਿਚ ਡਿਪਲੋਮਾ ਕੋਰਸ ਅਰੰਭ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਿੱਤੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ 1994-95 ਤੋਂ ਇਕ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਐਮ.ਐਸ.ਸੀ. ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਤਬਦੀਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਵਿਭਾਗ ਐਮ.ਐਸ.ਸੀ. (ਆਨਰਜ਼) ਦੇ ਦੋ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਇਓਲੋਜੀਕਲ ਸਾਇੰਸਜ਼ ਦਾ ਪੰਜ ਸਾਲਾ ਇੰਟੀਗ੍ਰੇਟਿਡ ਪੀ.ਜੀ. ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਵਿਭਾਗ ਕੋਲ ਉੱਚ ਯੋਗਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਅਧਿਆਪਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਫੈਕਲਟੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਫੈਕਲਟੀ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਖੋਜ ਉਪਰਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ 2003 ਤੋਂ ਡੀ. ਐਸ. ਟੀ., ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਫਿ਼ਸਟ (FIST) ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਦੇ ਤਹਿਤ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੈ। ਯੂ.ਜੀ.ਸੀ., ਡੀ.ਬੀ.ਟੀ., ਡੀ.ਐਸ.ਟੀ, ਏ.ਆਈ.ਸੀ.ਟੀ.ਈ , ਡੀ.ਆਰ.ਡੀ.ਓ, ਆਈ. ਸੀ.ਏ.ਆਰ- ਐਨ.ਏ. ਪੀ., ਡੀ.ਐਨ.ਈ.ਐਸ., ਅਤੇ ਸੀ.ਐਸ.ਆਈ.ਆਰ. ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਵੱਖ -ਵੱਖ ਫੰਡਿੰਗ ਏਜੰਸੀਆਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਿੱਤੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਵੱਡੇ ਖੋਜ ਪ੍ਰਾਜੈਕਟ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ। ਵਿਭਾਗ ਸਰਗਰਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਖੋਜ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਤਹਿਤ 500 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਉੱਚ ਪੱਧਰ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਨਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਪੇਟੈਂਟ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ। ਫੈਕਲਟੀ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਕੌਮੀ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਜੀ.ਐੱਮ.ਐਚ.ਸੀ. ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ, ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ ਫਾਰਮਾਸਿਊਟਿਕਲ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਰਿਸਰਚ, ਮੋਹਾਲੀ, ਸੰਤ ਲੋਂਗੋਵਾਲ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ਼ ਇੰਜੀਨੀਅਰਿੰਗ ਐਂਡ ਟੈਕਨੋਲੋਜੀ, ਸੰਗਰੂਰ, ਸੀ.ਐਸ.ਆਈ.ਆਰ., ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਦੇਵ ਵੈਟਰਨਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਐਨੀਮਲ ਸਾਇੰਸਜ਼ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ, ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ ਨੈਨੋ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਐਂਡ ਟੈਕਨੋਲੋਜੀ (ਇਨਸਟ), ਮੋਹਾਲੀ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਟੇਟ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਫਾਰ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਐਂਡ ਟੈਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ, ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ, ਸੀ.ਆਈ.ਏ.ਬੀ., ਮੋਹਾਲੀ, ਸੈਂਟਰਲ ਸੋਇਲ ਸੈਲੀਨਿਟੀ ਖੋਜ ਸੰਸਥਾਨ, ਕਰਨਾਲ, ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਐਗਰੋ ਜੂਸਜ਼ ਲਿਮਟਿਡ, ਅਬੋਹਰ, ਪੋਸਟ ਗ੍ਰੈਜੂਏਟ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ਼ ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਖੋਜ, ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ, ਆਲ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ਼ ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਸਾਇੰਸਿਜ਼, ਦਿੱਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਇੰਟਰਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਫਲੋਰੀਡਾ ਪੌਲੀਟੈਕਨਿਕ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਫਲੋਰੀਡਾ ਕਲੈਰੇਮੋਂਟ ਆਵਰਜ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਫਰਾਂਸ, ਫਲੋਰੀਡਾ ਪਾਲੀਟੈਕਨਿਕ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਯੂ.ਐਸ.ਏ., ਸਵਿਸ ਫੈਡਰਲ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ ਤਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ, ਸਵਿਟਜ਼ਰਲੈਂਡ, ਡੇਕਿਨ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਆ, ਅਤੇ ਮੋਲਿਕੂਊਲ ਇਨ੍ਕ ਯੂ.ਐਸ.ਏ, ਵਰਗੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸਹਿਯੋਗੀ ਪ੍ਰਜੈਕਟਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਫੈਕਲਟੀ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਉਦਯੋਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੰਸਲਟੈਂਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਿਚ ਅਧੁਨਿਕ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਸਾਜ਼-ਸਾਮਾਨ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ। ਟੀਚਿੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਸੈਮੀਨਾਰ ਲਈ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਮਾਰਟ ਕਲਾਸਰੂਮ ਮਲਟੀਮੀਡੀਆ ਪ੍ਰੋਜੈਕਟਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਤਿਆਰ ਹਨ । ਇਹ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਉਦਯੋਗਾਂ, ਵਿਦਿਅਕ ਅਤੇ ਖੋਜ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੋਜ਼ਗਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
