Date of Establishment of the Department- 1969
The department was set up in 1969 under the stewardship of Dr. Fauja Singh, one of the prominent historians of Punjab . National Security, International Relations, Strategic Thought, Defence Economics, Science and Technology, Theory and Practice of War, South Asia and Indian Ocean, Military Sociology, Military Psychology, International Law, Security Studies, Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies and Warfare in India are the areas which have been developed as the main thrust areas of specialization for Post-Graduate Studies leading to the award of M.A and M.Phil. degrees and for Research at the Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Studies.
The input of students for Post-graduate studies includes boys and girls from Humanities, Social Sciences and Pure Sciences. The students from different parts of India and abroad have completed their Masters Degree in the subject and are well-settled in their respective countries on the basis of the degrees acquired from this department. The Department has also been a source of attraction for the officers from the armed forces and Para military forces as it helps them in career promotion. A reasonably good number of Army officers up to the rank of Brigadier had been on the role of this department as students. Some of them have also acquired Ph.D. Degree from this department.

Scholarship
Department faculty have published nine books and published 229 research papers in Journals of International/National repute and/or in Edited Volumes or Proceedings of National/International Conferences/Seminars. The departments faculty has international recognition as evidenced by their invitations for doing collaborative research work and nominations to the editorial board of journals. Further the faculty of the department has carried out eight sponsored major research projects.
Conferences and Seminars
The department has so far organized ten national seminars/symposia. Apart from this a good number of extension lectures have also been organized.
